On November 26, 2008, ten Pakistani terrorists reached south Mumbai via the sea and carried out attacks across the city. The indiscriminate attack carried out by the Pakistani terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) killed 166 people and injured over 300 more.

Just before the anniversary, Israel renewed its designation of LeT as a terrorist organization. According to Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lior Haiat, the designation, which was originally enacted in 2013, has just been reasserted in official documents.

Six Jews were among those killed when terrorists kept residents captive at Chabad House’s Jewish outreach facility (Nariman House). This also coincides with Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas.

Timeline of the Mumbai Terror Attacks in 2008.

Ten terrorists carried out coordinated explosions and killings in Mumbai, killing 166 people. Here’s how the events played out:

21st November (evening): Ten terrorists board a boat in Karachi, Pakistan, and travel for almost 38 hours unnoticed by the Indian Navy.

22nd November: Each of the ten men receives six to seven 30-round magazines, as well as 400 bullets not loaded in magazines. They also have 8 hand grenades, an AK-47 assault weapon, an automatic loading revolver, credit cards, and dry fruit on hand.

Terrorists seized an Indian trawler, the Kuber, on November 23rd, killing four fishermen. They forced the captain to set sail towards India.

Terrorists kill the captain of the Kuber as it approaches Mumbai within four nautical miles (7 kilometers). They then board three inflatable speedboats and proceed to the Colaba jetty.

The boat arrives at Macchimar Nagar in Mumbai’s Cuffe Parade area at 8:10 p.m. Six terrorists disembark here, while the remainder sail along the coast. When locals inquire about their occupation, they claim to be students.

Another group disembarks in Badhwar Park in Colaba, Cuffe Parade, at about 08.30 p.m. They tell Marathi-speaking fishermen to mind their own business before splitting out and heading in opposite directions.

At the Leopold Cafe, gunshots were heard, killing ten people and injuring many more, including a Reuters news reporter. They also put bombs on two taxis, killing five people and wounding 15.

Four attackers entered the Taj Mahal Hotel, two entered the Oberoi Trident, two entered Nariman House, and two others, Ajmal Kasab and Ismail take a taxi to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).

Kasab and Ismail launched an attack on CSMT at 09.20 p.m., equipped with AK-47 and AK74U rifles, killing 58 people and wounding 104 others.

Kasab and Ismail arrive at Cama Hospital at 10.30 p.m. When hospital staff notices them approaching, they lock the patients’ rooms. In a shootout, ATS head Hemant Karkare and three officers are slain. The terrorists seize a jeep but are apprehended by Gamdevi police near Girgaum Chowpatty. Kasab is apprehended after Ismail is slain.

The commando operations at the Oberoi Hotel were completed on November 28th, with 24 bodies recovered and 143 hostages rescued alive. Two terrorists have been eliminated.

NSG commandos are deployed via fast rope onto the roof of Nariman House at 07.30 a.m., with snipers stationed in surrounding buildings to prevent attacks on the commandos.

The commandos uncovered all six captives, including the rabbi and his wife, tortured and murdered by the terrorists around 07.30 p.m.

Commandos engaged in violent gunfire around 08.30 p.m., eliminating the two terrorists and declaring the Nariman House operation over.

Despite continued room-to-room searches, commandos declared possession of the Taj Hotel at 8 a.m. on November 29th. The streets are filled with joy.

The Taj Mahal Hotel was reported to be entirely under government control around 4:20 p.m.
