More than 3,500 persons over the age of 60 who were randomly allocated to take a daily multivitamin supplement or a fake tablet for three years participated in the study, which was written up in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. These participants completed an online cognitive exam to measure their short-term memory at the start of the study and at the conclusion of each year. According to Adam Brickman, a professor of neuropsychology at Columbia University and the study’s principal investigator, the test assessed the activity of the hippocampus, a region of the brain that regulates learning and memory.
