African American women who are pregnant and seeking better futures for both themselves and their unborn children frequently struggle to preserve their emotional health, stay away from substance misuse, and build wholesome relationships. The Murua Moms Programme, which means “Respect” in Swahili, aids women in addressing these issues.

For pregnant American Africans of African descent, the Murua Moms program creates a framework for a healthier future. Expectant moms will be given holistic skills that put their own and their unborn children’s health first. The all-encompassing method combines lectures with interesting activities, informative movies, and guest speakers’ insights. For both mothers and fathers, the program provides intensive one-on-one and group emotional support.

The program includes a “Community-Wide Baby Shower,” a special occasion that enables fathers-to-be to gather necessities for bringing their children into the world. A typical support group is not what the Murua Moms program is. According to the program’s creators, it represents a dedication to altering the narrative one mum at a time.

The Murua Moms Education and Support Group meetings are set for Saturdays, August 5 through October 7 in 2023, according to Brakins Consulting and Psychological Services and the African American Child Wellness Institute (AACWI). According to Brakins, a number of organizations have collaborated to develop this transformative assistance effort. Supporters include the Minneapolis Foundation, the YWCA Foundation Grant Programme, the Minnesota Department of Human Services Cultural Ethnic Minority Infrastructure Grant (CEMIG) Programme, and the University Research & Outreach Centre (UROC).

Sessions for the Murua Moms Education and Support Group are held at the University Research Outreach Centre (UROC), 2001 Plymouth Ave. N., Minneapolis, MN 55411, from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon.

During these meetings, light refreshments will be provided, along with help with childcare and transportation.

The first 15 moms who sign up are the only ones who may participate, ensuring individualized attention and high-quality involvement. The deadline to register is July 30, 2023. Call Shirlynn LaChapelle at 763-220-0617 or the African American Child Wellness Institute (AACWI) at 763-522-0100 for further information.
