by Manojit Datta

Mutton, chicken, eggs, potatoes or veggies … the biryani pot is wrapped in a red cloth in almost all the shops. But why is it wrapped in red cloth? Why not in any other color? Know the real reason, the first biryani entry in Calcutta by the hand of Wazed Ali Shah and this absolutely foreign post fell in love with our hearts and minds! Long, long rice, tender meat, and a nice potato … Oops, what a paradise!  Wow, what a deliciousness,  But one thing to note is that biryani, be it mutton, chicken, eggs, potatoes or veggies … the biryani pot is wrapped in a red cloth in almost all the shops. But why is it wrapped in red cloth? Why not in any other color? Historically, according to the ‘Darbari custom’  of Emperor Humayun’s food service, red cloth and other metal or porcelain vessels were covered with white cloth for the dishes in the Silver pot.

This practice was later followed in the Mughal court as well. The Nawabs of Lucknow also followed this style of serving food and the use of color. Since then, the custom of covering biryani pots with red cloth has been going on.

However, like the various sages! Many people think that biryani pots are wrapped in red cloth to attract the attention of the buyers for the sake of business, not following the tradition of history or tradition the color red can attract the attention of the buyer from a distance.
