Impotence or erectile dysfunction occurs when a man is unable to achieve or maintain a penile erection satisfactory for sexual intercourse. Although it is normal for a man to have some problems with erections from time to time, erectile dysfunction that is regular or recurring is not normal and needs to be treated.

Erectile dysfunction is a common problem that can be caused by many reasons such as insufficient blood flow to the penis, diabetes, obesity, smoking, alcohol consumption, stress, etc. Also, erectile dysfunction can be completely reversible and so it is important to consult a doctor. A healthy sex life can help improve the quality of life, boost self-confidence, and prevent strained relationships between couples.

Let us explain in detail about erectile dysfunction (impotence) in this article.
What are the causes of Erectile Dysfunction (impotence)?
Erection is a neurovascular process that requires adequate blood supply and nerve supply to the penis. During sexual arousal, nerves send signals (impulses) that increase blood flow to the penis. This blood collects in two hollow chambers known as corpora cavernosa and enlarges and hardens the penis. Any blockage in blood flow to the penis or blockage of nerve impulses can lead to erectile dysfunction.

Common Causes of Erectile Dysfunction Are:-

High blood pressure and atherosclerosis mean hardening and narrowing of the arteries. Heart disease, diabetes, tuberculosis, and dyslipidemia increase cholesterol levels in the body. Kidney disease.
Treatment of Erectile Dysfunction:- Sildenafil (Viagra), Tadalafil, Vardenafil (Levitra, Staxyn), Avanafil (Standara). These drugs increase the circulation of nitric acid in the body, which relaxes the muscles in the penis and consequently increases blood flow, resulting in an erection. Common side effects seen with these medications include facial flushing, nasal congestion, visual disturbances, headaches, back pain, and indigestion. These drugs may not lower blood pressure with nitrates (commonly prescribed for chest pain), alpha-blockers, or if you have heart failure or hypotension. So it is important to consult a doctor before taking any medicine for erectile dysfunction.
Lifestyle changes such as:-
Stopping/limiting alcohol intake and smoking, following a healthy diet, and regular exercise. Get enough sleep and reduce stress, treating underlying diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
